Tours of the Bell Tower

Visit the newly restored bells in St Peters Church and try bell ringing
21st September 2019

After a year-long restoration, the bells of St Peter’s, Newnham, are back in action.  The tours will start at the very top of the tower where you’ll see the bells themselves, in their gleaming new colours.  On the floor below you’ll be able to watch the Victorian carillon, now completely rewired, going through its paces.  Below that, in the new ringing gallery, you’ll enjoy an unusual view over the nave and we’ll show you the bell ropes and give you a chance to ring a bell.  Finally on the ground floor we’ll open the Ellacombe chime cupboard where a set of hand ropes enables one person to play tunes on all the bells by activating hammers.

The tower of St Peter’s is a working museum of Victorian invention, which is well worth a visit.  Don’t wear your best clothes and come prepared to climb the turret staircase, which is a bit like exploring a medieval castle.  If you are interested in trying your hand at bell ringing, we’ll be holding a taster day later in the month.  Just ask your tour guide for more information.
