Clearwell

Clearwell Castle

Clearwell originated in Saxon times and has historical connections with iron ore extraction, which provided iron for the nation’s armies. The resulting nearby Clearwell Caves and café are well worth a visit; as is Puzzlewood, also linked to iron ore extraction. Most of the village lies within a conservation area and has fine buildings, such as Clearwell Castle, built in the early 18th century and the Church of St. Peter. The Village Cross is from the 14th century. The Tudor influence can be seen on several cottages, the Wyndham Arms Inn and Platwell House. Good restaurant food and family friendly hostelries are found in the village.

The town of Coleford is only three miles away and offers all local amenities.
