Sex Education brings the Wye Valley to a new audience
Our beautiful Wye Valley has been reaching TV screens around the world recently in popular Netflix series Sex Education. First released in January 2019, filming took place in 2018 in various locations within the Wye Valley across Monmouthshire in Wales, and Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in England.
Many of the locations in the show have been easily recognisable. Gillian Anderson plays a sex-therapist who lives with her son, Otis, played by Asa Butterfield, in a beautiful house in Symonds Yat, Herefordshire and another character lives at a local caravan park near Ross-on-Wye. Tintern and Llandogo in Monmouthshire feature heavily too and there are many scenes of the characters walking and cycling along the River Wye and through the woods nearby.
Bigsweir House, Gloucestershire was used as the venue for a party and Fedw Wood near Devauden, Monmouthshire is where characters go for cycle rides. Brockweir Bridge across the River Wye features in some scenes, as well as the Wireworks Bridge at Tintern which they cross on their way to school. Businesses feature too including Browns Village Stores in Llandogo which the characters go into. With the shop’s original signage remaining in place for filming they have already reported people coming in having recognised the location from the series. There’s no mistaking that this is the Wye Valley in all its glory!
Symonds Yat has also been experiencing added attention with fans turning up at this gorgeous riverside spot to view the Scandinavian style chalet which the main characters live in. The pub, The Saracen’s Head, is located just below the house and is welcoming fans of the show who are turning up wanting to visit key locations. See an interview we gave to BBC News about the show’s effect on tourism in the area here.
The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley have long attracted attention from TV and film companies of course. From Star Wars to Doctor Who, Harry Potter to Atlantis, our dramatic landscapes have inspired many location scouts and directors and we have developed a dedicated TV and film location trail for visitors to download and follow. You can find it here.
Sex Education has proved to be one of Netflix’s most popular shows, so much so that they have just announced that there will be a series 2, due to begin filming later this year. With more than 44 million viewers from across the world so far we’re looking forward to seeing our stunning Wye Valley attracting a new generation of explorers. We have been thrilled to see the area we know and love on such a huge international platform.
