Double Celebration for Monmouth Gelato House
One of Monmouthshire’s most successful artisan food businesses has double cause to celebrate this July. Green and Jenks Gelato House and Cafe, in Monmouth’s picturesque Agincourt Square, is very much a family business - six generations of family, to be precise. Producing exceptionally fine small batch Italian style gelato and sorbet, Green and Jenks first opened its doors on the 18th of July 2015 and quickly became one of the town’s most fashionable foodie venues.
The original company founder, Fredrick Green, was born on the National Trust’s Mottisfont Abbey estate, in Hampshire, the son of the estate’s miller. Leaving the countryside behind, he settled in London, embarking upon a career in the city’s thriving dairy industry. In 1888 the family moved to 1, Albany Road in Cardiff and opened ‘The Roath Park Dairy Company’, an extremely successful and well respected business which delivered milk and dairy products to customers within the locality.
Fredrick was succeeded by his daughter Lillian’s husband Hubert Jenks. In 1906 the dairy was one of the first 10,000 limited companies in the UK and this success afforded the family a rather privileged lifestyle, with all their children attending Cardiff University. The business finally passed onto their second son Norman. Norman retired in 1958, finally closing the family dairy which had traded for a remarkable 70 years.
Moving on almost 60 years and Norman’s daughter Shirley, granddaughter Gilly and great-granddaughter Harriet are company directors. Whilst Gilly is responsible for the day-to-day running of the company, her mother and daughter’s inputs are extremely important - with such close family links, the enthusiasm for their past is as important as their enthusiasm for the future. Frederick Green’s Victorian entrepreneurial spirit is a constant inspiration to Gilly.
With a background in HR management and agricultural consultancy, Gilly gained in-depth knowledge of the fruit industry within the borders area, which when combined with the family’s dairy credentials, sowed the seed which became Green and Jenks, a genuine Italian-style gelato house using predominately locally sourced produce.
After learning the art of gelato in Italy, Gilly opened Green and Jenks to much acclaim and now heads a team producing over 1000 litres of gelato a week - all onsite - as well as running a successful cafe and hosting specialist food and drink related events, the Gin and Gelato evenings always prove extremely popular. A few months after opening they were awarded Retailer of the Year at the 2015 Monmouthshire Business Awards, Great Taste Awards followed in 2017 for their Chuckleberry frozen yoghurt and Cafe Latte gelato.
Clients currently include the five star St David’s Spa Hotel in Cardiff, Chepstow’s Stone Rock Pizza restaurant, and local specialist food wholesaler, Vin Sullivan.
To celebrate 130 years of ‘The Roath Park Dairy Company', and 3 years of trading in Monmouth, Green and Jenks have birthday promotions running in-store from the 18th of July until the 1st August.
