Symonds Yat is one of the most iconic spots in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. There are actually three distinct parts to Symonds Yat: Symonds Yat Rock, a viewpoint with incredible views over the River Wye; and the two villages of Symonds Yat East and Symonds Yat West on either side of the Wye. The only way to travel from one side to the other is a four mile drive or using one of the two ancient hand-pulled ferries for foot passengers across the river operated by local pubs. There is also a suspension bridge, Biblins Bridge, one mile downstream, that can be used by walkers to cross the river. There is a popular circular walk of 2¾ miles crossing at the suspension bridge and using the hand ferry based in front of the Saracens Head Inn.

Some scenes from the popular Netflix series Sex Education were filmed around Symonds Yat.

Key features of Symonds Yat East and West:

Symonds Yat West has a large caravan and camping site, a small amusement park and a number of visitor attractions including the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo.

Symonds Yat East has a number of hotels and the Saracens Head Inn who operate one of the ferries. A footpath leads from the village up to Symonds Yat Rock. Another footpath and a cycleway, constructed on a former railway line, runs on the eastern bank of the river to Monmouth.

Canoeing/kayaking on the River Wye are popular activities at Symonds Yat and canoes/kayaks can be hired on either side of the river. There is also a wonderful river cruise available with Kingfisher Cruises starting from Symonds Yat East. Symonds Yat has a series of rapids making it a popular place for kayakers, and its rural nature makes it ideal for birdwatching.
