Towns and Villages in or near Goodrich

Description

Goodrich, in Herefordshire, is a small village bordering the river Wye, between Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye. It hosts a 17th century coaching inn, a shop and a primary school. However, the jewel in its crown is Goodrich Castle, standing majestically on a nearby wooded mound, overlooking the Wye. The castle was begun in the late 11th century by the English thane, Godric, who gave it his name. It still boasts one of the most complete sets of domestic buildings in any English castle. Goodrich Castle houses the famous "Roaring Meg", the only surviving Civil War mortar, which has returned to the castle after 350 years. The castle is maintained by English Heritage and is open to the public.
