Coldcroft Shires & Traditional Skills

Join our slower and more peaceful way of life. Enjoy time in the countryside on our farm where you can learn traditional skills and work our heavy horses. Farming as it used to be!

Attraction in or near Huntley

At Coldcroft Farm we host the glorious Coldcroft Shire Horses and traditional rural skills tuition, as well as provide our own farm produce for sale such as Ryeland Lamb, Gloucester Beef and Woollen products.

Time at Coldcroft Farm, on the lower slopes of the famous May Hill, in West Gloucestershire, has stood still. Rare breed, happy livestock live amongst summer meadows, old woodland, traditional farm courtyards and in a way of working life that has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Ryeland lamb is produced for the table, wool from the sheep is spun into throws, working Shire horses maintain both pasture and woodland. A quiet rural life is enjoyed by all.

We welcome guests to our farm, to join in a slower and more peaceful way of life. Step away from the rat race and worries of the modern world. Enjoy time in the countryside and on the farm you can learn traditional skills, like dry stone walling and letter carving.

Join the Coldcroft Shire horses who also live at the farm, and take a Shire horse and cart ride around the local countryside.

Heavy Horse Experience Days

Millie and Willam are traditional heavy horses. They are used by the farm to maintain the land and pasture and they are made available for you to enjoy as part of a heavy horse experience day provided by Jamie. Learn about the history of the Shire horse, how their role on the farm has changed over the years and how to correctly handle, harness and work them.

Our heavy horse experience days are unique and personal, tailored to each individual, we can guarantee no day is the same!

Our heavy horse experience days are ideally suited for up to two people.

Dry Stone Walling Courses and Carving Letters in Wood

Learn how to build a dry stone wall on the farm or letter carve in wood in the carving workshop on our introductory one or two day courses.

Both dry stone walling and letter carving are ancient and beautiful skills.

All training takes place on the farm. We have a cottage for rent if you wish to stay on the farm whilst learning new skills.

Jamie is an experienced craftsman of many years in both skills and will be your tutor for the duration of the course. Jamie has built many of the garden and field walls in the most prestigious of properties in the famous Cotswold Hills, where dry stone walling has been used to keep fields and garden boundaries for many centuries.

We offer Gift Vouchers so that you can make a present of a training course to a loved one. These can be arranged for all the rural skills training and for whatever value you would like

A weekend which includes both training and a session with the Shire horses can be arranged over a rural weekend stay at dates to suit you.
