Hot Pot Pottery - Pottery Activity Centre

Cosy, country pottery offering pottery activities and classes, a warm welcome and add on group meals

Attraction in or near Symonds Yat

HOT POT POTTERY - a cosy, country pottery activity centre offering pottery activities & classes, group meals, special events & pottery for sale. Our studio has a woodburner and sofas for colder months and courtyard seating in the summer. We have free WIFI and children and dogs are welcome (as long as others in the studio are happy with dogs and there is space).

COVID-19 STATEMENT: we have re-opened our pottery activities but we have had to change how they run & booking is essential.

At present we are offering the following:

Our popular pottery trial classes are great fun and are in our well-equipped studio and last 2-2.5 hours depending on the group size.

We take 2-8 people and they can be booked on a Thurs or Sat (10.30am start). Classes cost £40.00 per person plus £17.50 (between you) for onward delivery (if required) of any pots you leave for glazing & firing.

Due to Covid-19 we have had to make changes to our studio and how the classes run. We now have 4 work areas each designed to be shared by 2 people who don't need to distance from each other.

You get to try out 3 pottery techniques (wheel throwing, pinch pots & tiles) with a lot of help and encouragement and leave up to 3 favourite pieces each for glazing and firing with a choice of house glazes. We start our classes with demos of the techniques you will try & we have produced 2 on-line videos (Throwing on The Wheel & Pinch Pots & Tiles) to give you an idea of what to expect in advance. We usually have the coffee machine on during classes so you can order coffee/tea/cold drinks to be delivered to your table during class. Or if you are a group of 4-6 people, perhaps celebrating an event, you might want to complement your class with a pre-ordered Group Meal to be served to your work area after your class.

At present our ability to allow people in the studio purely to observe is limited. Please contact us if you want to bring others who are not participating. Dogs are also usually very welcome but due to the current situation, please contact us if you wish to bring your dog.

Pottery painting is creative, great fun, relaxing and perfect for any age. Att the moment we can't offer pottery painting on-site so we have put together some great  ‘take away’ pottery painting kits which can be hired overnight and enjoyed in your holiday accommodation with family or friends (min. group = 2). They can be booked Wed-Sat.

To book:

  • choose the day you want  & contact us to see if a kit is available (the earlier the better, but at the latest the morning before you want your hire to start)
  • take a look at our Range of Items to Paint & Prices
  • let us know what pottery pieces you want (please do this at the latest by 4.00pm the day before you want your hire to start)

Cost is £6.50 per person plus the cost of pieces chosen from our range (from £4.75 to £10.50). You will also need to leave a £20 deposit (cash) per kit.

Once you have returned your painted pottery it needs to be glazed and fired. We fire Sunday evening with collection from 9.30am Monday (deliveries go out later the same day). Delivery (if requred) is £17.50 for a box(es) to one UK address.

Kit collection is 10.00-11.00am on day of hire. Return is 9.00-10.00am the following day. Social distancing, mask wearing, good ventilation & staggering of collection/return times will be observed & all kits are disinfected and dried between outings.

If you are a group of 4 or more you may be interested in pre-ordering take-away coffees/teas and/or muffins/cake to enjoy while you are painting. Take-away food needs to be ordered at least 3 days in advance as we buy and bake fresh. Please advise us of any intolerances/allergies.

Roughly once a month we also run a one-day throwing workshop. This is a small group of 2 min. 4 max. with your own wheel for the day and includes lunch, all materials, decorating with slip (coloured liquid clay) & leaving up to 6 pots with us for glazing and firing. The workshops are £140 per person plus a one-off cost £17.50 for delivery of all  pots to one UK address (if delivery is required).

If you want to take a look at our pottery, you can book a private gallery browsing session (no pressure to buy) in our Gallery/Shop. We have our pottery on display and for sale in our gallery on furniture rather than plinths, allowing you to handle and choose the pieces you want. We make a wide range of pottery to suit all budgets, all handmade on-site and inspired by our natural woodland surroundings.

ACCOMMODATION: We also run The House of Bread (Holiday Cottages) at the same address - if you are looking for somewhere to stay or you are interested in a Creative Break.

PARKING: We have free, off-road, courtyard parking for up to 5-6 cars and there is additional parking up on the village green near the church in Christchurch.

PAYMENT: We prefer cash over card payment if possible as we are not allowed share card payment charges with customers. We hope you understand. Social distancing, mask wearin, good ventilation and sanitising will be observed at the till.

CANCELLATIONS/NO SHOW: We don't operate a deposit system but we do have  'Cancellations/No Show Policy' to protect us against last minute cancellations, recduction in group sizes or people who just don't show up on the day!

Please see our website or email/phone (01594 837943/07974 983908) for more information.

VOUCHERS: We sell vouchers for our pottery activities/pottery for sale which make perfect Christmas or Birthday presents. You can come in and pay/collect in person or pay on-line and we will post them out.
