Soudley

Towns and Villages in or near Cinderford

Description

A small but thriving village south of Cinderford and the location of the excellent Dean Heritage Centre and other attractions such as Soudley Ponds and the Blaize Bailey viewpoint.

The photograph shows the Forest of Dean Hod Boys Memorial on the Blue Rock Path, Upper Soudley.  It is a carving of a Forest of Dean boy hauling boxes of coal ('hod') in the narrow mine shafts - often not more than 2ft high. Children, both girls and boys, as young as 8 were widely employed in the mines all over Great Britain, thus forming one of the - literally - backbones of the industrialisation
