Let’s Get Active
Within more than 110sq km of forest and 160km of winding rivers, there are teen-pleasing wild adventures at every turn - race along cycle tracks, monkey around in the trees, paddle down the Wye, explore caves and even more.
High Octane Water Thrills – National Diving & Activity Centre
A flooded rock quarry has become a high-octane haven for adrenaline junkies. There is the brand-new aqua park, a floating assault course to slip and slide around while trying not to get totally wiped out by friends and family, a 700m long zipline, a 75m high giant swing, flyboards, scuba diving taster sessions and a whole lot more.
With more than 40km of cycle and mountain bike trails running through the Forest of Dean itself, you can opt for sedate and serene or muddy and mean. The family trail is a great day out for everyone but to experience a real thrill, take the Verderer’s Trail and get the adrenaline pumping. Companies also offer a range of coaching sessions, including getting to grips with the basics and learning how to take on those jumps and drops.
Canoeing & Kayaking
Go solo in a one-man kayak or team up with the family in a canoe to cruise down the River Wye. Navigate around meandering bends, avoid beaching in the shallows and tackle the rapids. Follow a guide or go your own way with a range of fantastic companies that offer different starting locations along the river and a variety of packages, including half-day paddles, full-day trips or multi-day overnight camping experiences. Check out Wye Canoes, Canoe the Wye, Wyedean Canoe Hire, Inspire 2 Adventure and Monmouth Canoe & Activity Centre
Deep Level Caving – Clearwell Caves
Exploration is not limited to above ground - get kitted up and dive deep below the forest following an experienced guide on a caving exploration that involves crawling and scrabbling 200ft underground in a labyrinth of 600 acres of passageways and caverns.
Become the king of the swingers on one of these high-wire adventures. Go Ape offers the Tarzan swing and a 180-metre zipline that will send you racing through the forest or take part in fiendishly fun activities amidst the trees at Forest of Dean Adventure where there is also a 12-metre climbing tower, a low level assault course and an archery range.
Symonds Yat is a great place to experience the thrill and excitement of rock climbing at its best and get to know the holds – from a gaston to a guppy! With more than 500 named climbing routes, there is something to challenge every climber from novice to expert.
Put down the Xbox controller and swap the Battle Royale of Fortnite for some laser fuelled Battle Royale amongst abandoned vehicles and hideouts with Battlesports Glos, or seek and destroy the insurgents with Wye Valley Laser Ops.
Like a real-life videogame, paintballing requires players to use a combination of teamwork and tactics to capture the flag, protect the president and be the best. Load up with Battlelands or HS Activities who also offer airgun experiences and archery.
Crazy Golf and American Diner – Krazy Golf Lydney
This 15-hole crazy golf course is the perfect place to start the holiday, with each hole themed on a local tourist attraction to help get you clued up. Sparky’s retro diner is on hand to keep up the energy levels with tasty burgers, sundaes and shakes or head to Wye Valley Miniature Golf for 12 holes around an ancient Rome themed course.
